Mortgage Underwriter
In-person role at 16430 Park Ten Pl, Houston, Texas 77084.
Role: Responsible for managing and monitoring daily workflow of loan files. Be an expert on agency loan guidelines and underwriting procedures while collaborating effectively with the mortgage department.Review files for completeness and compliance, while being responsible for underwriting mortgage loans that comply with the Credit Union's policy and guidelines.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Reviews and evaluates information on mortgage loan documents to determine if buyer, property, and loan conditions meet Credit Union, government, and/or investor standards.
- Approves or rejects loan application or requests additional information
- Evaluates acceptability of loan applications as they relate to guidelines published by FNMA, Freddie Mac, and other private real estate investors to ensure acceptability by those entities in the event the Credit Union desires to participate in secondary marketing activities.
Prepares and assembles appropriate documents in loan file, including acceptance or denial, and returns file to originating mortgage loan department.
Records loan rejection, in compliance with regulatory and Credit Union guidelines for documentation of decisions to decline
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Performance Measurements
- Ensure closing documents are in compliance with policies and procedures, all required signatures have been obtained, endorsed and/or notarized, and files are closed within acceptable time frames.
- Ensure established credit union investor and government standards for the mortgage industry are met at all times and strict compliance with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations are adhered to.
- Provide friendly, accurate, professional service to members and associates by responding to messages and correspondence within acceptable time frames.
- Meet or exceed the minimum established individual goals each month.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of all mortgage products and rates within the credit union and
from the mortgage industry.
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience - Two years to five years of similar or related experience.Requires front line mortgage underwriting experience current within the last 18 month.Strong knowledge in FNMA/FHLMC; FHA/VA programs beneficial.
Proficiency with Desktop Underwriter, Loan Prospector and Encompass with AUS experience. Knowledge of current RESPA requirements, regulatory/investor lending guidelines, and State specific laws related to mortgage lending is required.Thorough knowledge of mortgage products, regulations, and processes.
Education - (1) A bachelor's degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree, or (3) Documentation of at least three years continuous experience serving as a front line Mortgage Underwriter.
Interpersonal Skills - Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve a higher degree of confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication.
Other Skills - Must have good communication skills and work independently. Must be self-motivated. Must be detail-oriented and have organizational skills.
